Jason Garwood
September 30, 1926

Jason was born and raised in the Sandhills. He is tough, honest, generous, humble and has never told a conscious lie. He was never happier than when on a horse or working horses while ranching.

He was born September 30, 1926 at home in Survey Valley, Cherry County, to Ernest and Rosie Garwood. He has 2 brothers, Dick & Earl, and 3 sisters, Ellen, Ruth & Mary Ann. Jason was married to Inez, who passed away in 2004. Their children are Peg, Donna, Sandy & Dale.

Jason was drafted into the Army and served in the Pacific. In 1946, Jason came home and started ranching and has ranched every since. Jason worked on the family ranch, Metzgers (now Abbotts), Cole’s & Shadbolt’s. He loved breaking horses—saddle and work horses, and coyote hunting on horseback. He fed haystacks with horses until he had a stroke in 2006.

Numerous news articles were written about him and his use of horses to put up and feed hay and about his family living in a sod house that is still standing. A few poems have been written about him and his cowboy way of life.
