Mose was born, raised and spent his whole life in the Nebraska Sandhills. He is an excellent horseman, cowman and purebred cattle producer. Known for being “one of the best” with a horse and heel rope in a branding corral, Mose is recognized as a true cowboy.
Ronald Maurice Hebbert was born March 29, 1930 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alliance, NE. His parents were Albert and Ima Fern (Shepard) Hebbert. Mose was the oldest of five children, with three brothers-Gene, Roger, Gary, and a sister-Janice “Pinky” (Hebbert) Clements. Mose was raised in the Sandhills of Nebraska in the Gordon and Ashby area. He attended high school at the University Of Nebraska School Of Agriculture at Curtis, NE, graduating with the class of 1948.
On September 18, 1949, he married Merla Lenore Rex in Hyannis, NE. Mose and Merla started out their married life working on a ranch with Merla’s parents, Merle and Opal Rex. They later formed the company of Hebbert & Rex on the ranch located southeast of Hyannis, NE. Mose and Merla have five children-David Hebbert, Toni Hebbert Knott, Terry Hebbert Wilson, Cheryl Hebbert Sheets, and Tami Hebbert Taylor, all of whom helped on the ranch as they grew up. In 1982, the partnership of Hebbert Charolais was formed when son David and his wife joined the family ranching operation. Since that time, Mose has been an active partner in raising and marketing purebred Charolais cattle.
Mose grew up riding and working with horses. He started haying at the age of 6 years old on a horse drawn scatter rake. He fed hay using work horses until the early 1980’s. He raises some colts and just recently started training a pair of young horses to drive as a buggy team. He enjoys being able to ride and work cattle on the ranch. Mose is a Gold Card member of the Nebraska State Rodeo Association and was a member of the Senior Pro Rodeo Association, competing in the team roping event. In 1972, he was the runner up team roping champion in the Nebraska State Rodeo Association, winning the Nebraska Finals Rodeo team roping average that year, partnering with his son, Dave. Although he no longer competes, he is still an avid rodeo fan, following his grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the rodeo trail.
Mose has given back to his community through years of support and service. He was on the Grant County District 8 school board, the church council of the Hyannis United Church of Christ and served on the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Board. He has also been on the board of directors for the Sandhills Cattle Association, the Nebraska Charolais Association, Area 6 Nebraska Cattlemen, and the Nebraska State Rodeo Association.
In 1994, Mose was the honored recipient of the Sautter Memorial Award, which is presented to an individual for outstanding work in conservation and service to the Sandhills area. Hebbert Charolais Ranch was selected by the American International Charolais Association as the 1996 Seedstock Producer of the Year. In February, 2010, Hebbert Charolais was chosen for the Outstanding Producer of the Year award by the Nebraska Charolais Association.
